Worn out from her birthday celebration. :)
Our lil' Miss Scarlett is just so much fun as a brand new one year old. Though she's still rather fiesty (and I suspect it's just her personality and how she'll always be), she makes us laugh, and she's full of love and affection ... and she's developing and learning so quickly!
Her list of words is now:
- Papa
- Mama
- Baby
- Bella
- Brother
- Bubble
- Ball
- Cheese (baby girl loves her cheese!)
Her movements on request are:
- Clapping
- Arms up
- Bump (she'll bump her head on ours)
- Kiss (she now gives cute, open mouthed baby kisses)
- Combing her hair (she holds the comb up to her hair)
- And just today, she put her hands together in the sign for "more"
- And she's on the verge of waving, too.
Just this week, she's started taking a deep, excited breath, then giggles puts her hands over her eyes when she sees us headed her way.
She's also doing really great with her water cup (or Christian's ... whichever is closest to her) and has started going, "Ahhhhhhh" when she's done (learned from Jonathan).
Eating
Miss Scarlett still isn't eating too much at one sitting, but is open to tasting almost anything - and she still prefers salty foods. Bitter/sour foods, too. We gave her a taste of lemon and she didn't even flinch and wanted more. She also chewed in the rind and liked it.
I'd say her favorite food is problaby shredded cheese. She also goes crazy for my frozen raspberries, which are very tart. Crackers, Cheerios, couscous, and brisket are other things she enjoys. Today I was eating sugar snap peas in the pod, and she desperately wanted some. So I gave her a pod and let her chew away (taking out of her mouth the chunks she broke off).
After a few tastes of tart raspberries
We were very conservative with Christian when it came to sweets, but Scarlett has already had ice cream and cake (even outside of her birthday). Just a small amount ... but it was a very long time before we ever gave Chrsitian sweets outside of his birthday cake. And the only thing she gets to drink is water, and now milk since she's a year old. No juice. I don't think she'd like juice anyway, since she doesn't like sweet things.
Teeth
Scarlett is now getting in a third bottom front tooth and so far has two bottom molars coming in. If there are more, I haven't been able to see them.
Sleeping
Sleep? What's that? I have forgotten, and Scarlett has never known.
Tantrums
I think children are just born with the ability to throw an all out tantrum. If Scarlett's in a mood, she'll throw a tantrum with the best of them if she doesn't get her way. You wouldn't think she has it in her to see her when she's NOT throwing a tantrum. She seems so sweet and dainty.
Stranger Anxiety
Miss Scarlett is a definite Mommy's Girl. These days, she doesn't like to be handed to anybody else - even to Jonathan much of the time. Thankfully, she still goes into the church nursery okay.
Curiosity
Wow, this kiddo is into cabinets and drawers ... and EVERYTHING. I left the room for a moment to put away clean clothes and returned to find this scene is the kitchen:
She also loves to pull things apart: books, stickers on items, cotton balls. And her favorite thing might be to pull everything out of her diaper bag.
The Doctor
Scarlett had her 12 month well-child exam this week. She's still a very petite baby (see chart below). So petite, in fact, that she's been labeled as "failure to thrive."
Wow, what a terrible designation to give a healthy child. For me, it conjures up images of emaciated children in Ethiopia. But, I do understand ... she's a small baby and they've got to make a note of it in her records, and the commonly used term is "failure to thrive."
The doc made a comment about Scarlett being a skinny baby ... but I completely disagree. Skinny compared to whom? An overweight baby whose already eating Twinkies for lunch?
Here she is ... she looks perfect to me!
And believe me, I do wish she'd eat more. But, she's certainly not starving. The doctor has recommended we really increase her fat intake three ways:
- Start her on whole milk. He suggested even cutting out the water she drinks and replae it with milk. I understand the rationale, but I'm not going to stop with the water and risk her losing interest in drinking it. But I will offer her milk more often than water.
- Put butter (the real stuff) on everything she eats.
- Give her peanut butter.
Peanut butter? To a one year old? I think I waited until Christian was at least two before introducing peanut butter. But, differnet information has come out about peanut butter since Chrsitian was a baby. And long-story-short, I was okay with the peanut butter. She's been exposed to it, i.e., if I have some peanut butter and don't wash my hands after handling it. Jonathan gave her peanut butter that night, and nothing happened. So she's good to go with peanut butter!
I hear some children who are labeled as "failure to thrive" must go in for regular weight checks. Scarlett doesn't have to. I am hopeful her measurements will be satisfactory for her 15 month checkup.
